An overwhelming majority of banks are utilizing a service oriented architecture, according to a new report from industry analysis firm Forrester Research.

According to the firm's survey of 80 banking IT decision-makers worldwide, 80 percent have deployed a service oriented architecture in a production environment. The range of penetration among respondents was between one-third and more than half of all applications.

"Many advanced banks are working on sophisticated target-state architectures," Jost Hoppermann, a vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research, said. He added that the end of the recession is accelerating SOA adoption among banks.

Forrester's report also revealed that 71 percent of respondents plan to service-enable segments of their application deployment within the next two years. That figure is a dramatic rise from the 21 percent that currently service-enable their applications.

More companies figure to deploy SOA over the coming years, according to a Wintergreen Research report. The firm predicts the SOA market to increase to $10.3 billion by 2015 at a compound annual growth rate of 17 percent. Previously, Research and Markets estimated the market to reach more than $9 billion in 2014, up from $2 billion in 2007.
