The Geospatial Information Systems market experienced a stellar year in 2010 and is expected to grow even more during the foreseeable future, according to a recent Daratech report.

The research firm revealed the geospatial information systems market had revenues of $4.4 billion in 2010 for growth of 10.3 percent. In 2011, sales of GIS software, services and data is expected to grow another 8.3 percent to reach $5 billion, according to Daratech.

"Demand for GIS/geospatial products is driven by an increasing global need for geographically correlated information," Daratech CEO Charles Foundyller said.

He added that growth in the GIS market will accelerate alongside the proliferation of websites, such as Google Earth and consumer navigation systems, that link business and consumer information based on geography.

The report also revealed sales of GIS to government entities across the globe have grown at a compound annual growth rate of 7.2 percent over the past eight years.

The National Nuclear Security Administration was recently honored for its use of GIS in its G2 system for the organization's Global Threat Reduction Initiative. The system combined data from locations across the globe to further the project's goal of reducing nuclear threat levels.
