While many information technology leaders have recently discussed the importance of IT governance, a smaller number have actually implemented such a process. A recent IT Business Edge article stated installing a framework is among the best ways to get projects off the ground.

According to Nicky Tiesenga, a partner at IBM, installing a framework allows for all IT members, as well as any other business employee involved with a technology project, to be on the same page. Tiesenga further stated organizations tend to have varying definitions of governance, as leadership changes take place among leadership roles in companies.

Tiesenga recommends companies adopt a framework, such as the IT Infrastructure Library or Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology. Implementing ITIL or COBIT is important “because everybody has these international standards they can apply to an organization, regardless of the company they come from,” Tiesenga told IT Business Edge.

Having an IT governance plan in place has already benefited many companies globally. A recent survey from the IT Governance Institute regarding IT in India found 50 percent of respondents said their practices related to IT governance have improved the company's management of IT-related risks.
